Confirm the currency, check the total and understand conversion choices before you pay.

Money in Los Cabos

Mexico's currency is the Mexican peso, shown as MXN. In Los Cabos, you may also see prices quoted in U.S. dollars. The dollar sign alone can be ambiguous, so confirm the currency before agreeing to a price or making a payment.

Prepare more than one way to pay

Ask your card provider about foreign transaction charges, cash withdrawal costs and any travel settings before leaving home. Check which cards a business accepts rather than assuming the same payment options are available everywhere.

Some cash in useful denominations can help with smaller purchases. Plan what you need for the day instead of relying on a particular ATM from an older directory.

Understand the conversion choice

A payment terminal or ATM may offer to convert the amount into your home currency. This service is called dynamic currency conversion and may include its own exchange rate or markup. Review the displayed costs and your card's terms before choosing. You can ask for the transaction to be processed in the local currency.

When withdrawing money, check the ATM's currency, fee and total before accepting. Your own bank may charge separately.

Compare the amount you will receive

For cash exchange, ask for the final amount after fees. A reference exchange rate is useful for comparison, but it does not guarantee the rate offered by a particular business. Keep your receipt when needed.

Review restaurant and service bills before paying, especially if a charge is unclear. Ask what is included and how a voluntary tip can be added if you choose to leave one.

A few checks at the point of payment are more useful than a fixed exchange-rate range in an old article.
