Ships
Cabo San Lucas is an anchor port for all cruises sailing on Mexico's Riviera and Sea of Cortez itineraries, and as such it's experiencing quite a tourist boom. This party town, population 100,000 and growing (mostly with Americans), has been dubbed the Cozumel of Mexico's West Coast, and is duly replete with duty-free shops and tacky trinket stores -- though it is raising the level of its shopping options.
One of the downsides for most travelers whose ships sail here: All must anchor and tender passengers in to the port itself. That means -- especially for those folks sailing on 2,000-plus behemoths -- you'll need to factor in extra time getting to and from your ship. Even odder in this quite multi-faceted place is the fact that some ships only stop for half-day visits, which means that actual on-land time can be extremely limited.
Ferries
Ferry service is available daily to and from La Paz to Mazatlan and Topolobampo on the Mexican mainland. The Ferry Dock is located at Pichilingue Terminal, west of La Paz City, two-hours north of Los Cabos by road.
The ferry to Mazatlan (SEMATUR) departs daily at 3:00 p.m. and arrives in Mazatlan at approximately 8 a.m. The return ferry departs Mazatlan at 3 p.m. daily and arrives in La Paz at approximately 8 a.m. The uncomfortable trip is about 15 to 17 hours depending upon wind, weather, and currents. Once your vehicle is stowed below, you will not be allowed access, so bring your important belongings on deck with you.
From Topolobampo (BAJA FERRIES) to La Paz, the trip is a just over five hours, leaving Topolobampo at midnight. The return ferry departs La Paz at 4 p.m. and sails back to Topolobampo. This is a newer and faster ferry. Like SEMATUR once your vehicle is stowed below, you will not be allowed access, so bring your important belongings on deck with you.
Buses
Two bus companies, Suburcabos & Interbaja, feature modern, air-conditioned and clean vehicles that run between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. They provide service within the entire highway route along the Tourist Corridor and two towns.The cost to ride starts at 7 pesos and is as high as 25 pesos (from terminal to terminal) in both towns.
Other city buses that provide service while moving about in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are used more by the local people, but are just as easy to handle by tourists as well. There are no bus stops for these city buses, just raise your hand to flag one down or stand near where others are congregating to wait for one to stop.
Taxis
Taxi services are very developed in the Los Cabos area. A printed price table should be presented by the taxi driver by law in order to avoid over charging.
Taxis in Cabo are available from the airport and at most locations in Los Cabos. At the airport the collective taxi (a small 9 passenger van) costs about $18.00 per person to Cabo San Lucas. There are larger buses available for about $12.00 per person.
The collective taxis and buses will make several stops on the way from the airport to your hotel. Getting back to the airport from Cabo will cost about $55 to $90 for a private taxi. Most hotels offer shuttle service for a reduce rate.

Rental Cars
There are literally dozens of rental car agencies in and around Los Cabos from Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo, including Hertz, Budget, Thrifty, Avis, National, Payless and countless smaller independent agencies. Most of the major Cabo rental companies maintain offices in Los Cabos, particularly at the airport. Expect to pay at least 700 pesos per day. (**You may sometimes be able to get a better price by reserving a car on the internet prior to arrival.)
Make sure insurance (seguros in Spanish) is included—if you have an accident without it, you will have to settle the claim there or go to jail until it is resolved. You should also check the condition of the car before departing—and make the rental agent aware of any damage.
